In A Landscape by John Cage (arranged for tuned gongs, crotales, and electric bass)
In A Landscape (1948) by John Cage (1912-1992) is a composition for solo piano. Though it is commonly played by percussionists on the marimba, I came to the realization that the resonance and range of the piano needed to be acknowledged. With a very good set of tuned Thai gongs, crotales, and an electric bass, this piece is not only accessible for a percussionist. But also quite enjoyable for listeners who appreciate the music of Cage or even just the soothing sounds of well-tuned gongs.

The piece is written for a low C marimba with a quartertone extension, multiple percussion instruments, and voice. For more information, please visit James Wood's website. For the full audio recording of the piece, please look into my album, "Speaking to His Craft." This video was recorded for the 202...
Rain Tree, Garrett Mendelow & Shiki

Full run through of Toru Takemitsu's masterpiece for percussion trio, Rain Tree! I had the pleasure of recording this with Ayami Okamura and Dan DeSimone of the Schiki Duo, and would only be happier if didn't miss so many notes :P However, that's live performance for everyone, and this was a particularly great run with great musical moments and chamber playing. Hopefully next time we can have t...

I was fortunate enough to work with James Wood two weeks prior to this performance at PASIC. And though this was the first full run since, I was actually quite happy with the result.
Psappha by Iannis Xenakis

Finally getting up a great recording of Psappha. Thanks to DeLane Doyle and Aaron Gochberg from Filament media for collaborating with me on this one. And standing there while I tried to run it through multiple times... We finally got a good one, and though there are some mistakes, I'm proud with the result and the overall contour of the performance. For best sound, use stereo speakers or headph...
Rebonds b+a Iannis Xenakis

A complete run-through of Rebonds ( 1987-89 ) by Iannis Xenakis ( 1922-2001 ). The recording is a straight run without edits. However, I mixed up my first and second runs of the video with each other and didn't notice until I finished editing. Oddly enough, the tempos were exactly the same in each run, so you have to try very hard to see where I swapped footage... In any case, enjoy! I always s...

Performance of Midare from my Junior recital. Enjoy!
Awesome recording! What are you using to hold the metals above the wood?
Thanks! Just some long bolts with thin foam mounted on a square tube. That is then mounted on a short cymbal stand.
Thank you!
Nice video!
Thank you!
Wow, this is really lovely for all the senses, Garrett. Congratulations on this beautiful project!
Thank you, Pete! 😊
Beautiful performance and setting! I think this would make John Cage very happy! Congratulations!
Thank you, Michael! Much appreciated 🙏🏻
Nice arrangement. I always thought that composition would sound great on tuned gongs, but I never had enough gongs to try it. If you haven't heard it, there's a really great gamelan version by Gamelan Pacifica on their 'Trance Gong' CD.
Thank you for the recommendation. I have heard the recording. But it is with traditional Gamelan instruments in a different key, correct? I wanted to incorporate the tempered Thai gongs with the bass in order to capture the essence of the original piece, but with this arrangement of instruments that also created “modest choreography” while playing ;)
Garrett, I echo every aspect of Peter Pommel's thoughtful comments! Additionally ~ I admired your setup and appreciated the peaceful video ~ thank you, one needs intelligent contemplative moments like these given societal trends these days. 2-thumbs up and 5 stars~!
Thank you, Mike! That means a lot! I think the only thing missing is a dancer, as it was originally composed to accompany one. But next time maybe… 🤔
@@nsperc1989 But your mallets were dancing. :-)
Touché 😂
True wonderful sound! What a balanced and well tuned instrument! Beautiful arrangement and unbelievable control blending these instruments into one great gong-keyboard! Amazing!.
Thank you, Peter! Always appreciate your feedback! 🙏🏻
very good
primitive work
superb!
Bravo...
This is awesome. Found you through Maria Alejandra Jimenez, Subscribed!
Thanks! Really appreciate it!
I keep coming back to this video man. Might be hands- down my favorite interpretation of Psappha! You absolutely nailed it.
Thank you, Jacobo! I will be coming out with a new video of both Rebonds and Psappha this summer that will also have masterclass video link attached. Stay tuned!
Which kind of wood blocks are you using ?
What kind of wood are your blocks made out of? I'm playing this piece right now and I can't decide if I want to buy purpleheart.
Purple Heart sounds great. But it splinters very easily even if you finish it. I use Honduran Mahogany, and even unfinished it holds up well.
an excellent interpretation of rebonds, what type of wood is used for the part of the Rebonds wood blocks b); excellent job congratulations
Thank you! This wood here is Bubinga. But I’ll soon be replacing this video with a new one, which will feature Padouk woodblocks
Awesome instrument selection, great flow through the piece and overall a natural, catching musicality!
Excellent interpretation of a very important composition!
Great performance!
Wonderful performance, Garrett... keep up the good work!!!
Bravo! Great instrument selection, performance, and production.
Hi! Very good version, I'm a big fan. I have two questions, first, what sticks do you use to play "rebonds b"? And second, what type of wood used to make the woodblocks? Thanks a lot!👍🏼
Thanks! Made the mallets myself. Hard rubber. I made the blocks out of Padouk. I also sell the blocks myself. Now I finish them so they last longer.
Thanks Garrett, great suggestion, your version of rebonds is my favorite. Great set and the right time (lots of people play it way faster than 60bpm as Xenakis written). I'll keep working on it! All the best!
absolutely beautiful!! i am studying this piece, but i am having problems to memorize it. any suggestion? thanks
Hey there! thanks for the compliment! I would suggest diving the movements into larger musical sections. after that divide each of those sections into small subsections. Make a point of memorizing at least one subsection per day, and it adding a new one to the previous material. Do not feel the need to memorize in order of events. come at the piece from different angles as needed. slow and steady wins the race. also, constantly remove the score from your vision when memorizing. get used to it not being there. hope that helps!
Awesome! Any chance you'll post the full piece at some point?
+Stephen K Thanks, man! I am recording it along with many other pieces this Spring as apart of a 7 year video project and masterclass video series of the standard solo percussion repertoire.
Fantastic, Garrett!
Thanks, Duarte!
@FALCOY Thanks! I just made a set with wooden beads attached to thin wooden rods going half way through the top of the core. But I would suggest fiberglass rods. They won't break ...
I REALLY liked your performance. How did you solve the problem of changing to drum sticks. It's hard to see on the video . Did you tape sticks to your mallets ? Clever !
